A typeface from the world beneath.

Oohbahn — a monospaced typeface inspired by Vienna U-Bahn signage.

Oohbahn typeface specimen

Oohbahn started with a simple question: what would the unmistakable voice of Vienna’s U-Bahn signage sound like if it became a proper, usable typeface? The answer is a technical, monospaced font that feels equally at home on a platform sign and in a 3D XR interface — retro and futuristic at the same time, deliberately brütal, quietly fun.

Origin

The starting point was the city itself: the angles of Vienna’s metro signage, its fixed-width cadence, and the way it delivers information without ornament. We kept the typeface strictly monospaced to protect that rhythm, then pushed the forms toward something that could hold its own outside the platform too.

Character

Oohbahn is built for real-world use: full Latin coverage including ÄÖÜß, punctuation for editorial work, and symbols for the technical contexts it was born in. It carries a clear identity without becoming precious — retro in its influences, futuristic in its execution.

Release

Oohbahn is released free to download as a 120 kb .OTF file. A type specimen, a small gift, and a quiet love letter to the city it came from.
